Mary Mediatrix
This image of the Holy Virgin is in one of the chapels of the Basilica of Merciful Love in Collevalenza(Italy). The picture was painted by Elis Romagnoli. Mary Mediatrix is represented with a lily on her chest and open arms, as if she were asking her Divine Son for mercy.
Mary receives Jesus in her immaculate heart, symbolized by the Host over the lily.
Since the womb, Jesus nourishes the deep desire to offer himself in sacrifice for us. This is why he enters into the world, addressing these words to the Father: “Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but you prepared a body for me; you took no delight in holocausts and sin offerings. Then I said, ‘As is written of me in the scroll, Behold, I come to do your will, O God.’”(Heb 10:5–7).
The Host on Mary’s chest refers to Jesus’ Eucharistic gift and invites us to this same oblation.
Mary Queen, filled with the Spirit, crushes the head of the Evil one with her foot: this is the sign of the assured hope in the victory of God’s Merciful Love over the evil in the world (rainbow).
Mary Queen is Mediatrix of the Mercy, not only because she intercedes for us before her Son to obtain graces, but also because of her “Here is the handmaid of the Lord” (Lk 1:38) she invites us in a motherly way to do the same, to become capable as well of better receiving and giving this divine Mercy.
